Medicines factory: the licence, the manufacturing authorisation, GMP and a marketing authorisation for each medicine
A medicines factory needs three documents from the Medicines and Medical Devices Agency: the licence for pharmaceutical activity, the manufacturing authorisation and the good manufacturing practice (GMP) certificate. It employs a qualified person with a higher degree in pharmacy and two years’ experience in manufacturing. Each medicine may be sold only after it receives its marketing authorisation.
| Code | Activity | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| 21.20 | Manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations | Medicines in any form, sera and vaccines, homeopathic preparations, diagnostic tests including pregnancy tests, biotech pharmaceutical products, and wadding, gauze and bandages impregnated with medicine. Herbal teas come under 10.83. |
| 82.92 | Packaging activities | Packaging under contract, including blister packing, and labelling. For medicines, the law treats packaging and division as manufacturing: they require the licence and the manufacturing authorisation, even if the company makes nothing else. |
| 46.46 | Wholesale of pharmaceutical goods | Wholesale distribution of other manufacturers’ medicines, with a wholesale distribution authorisation from the same agency. It is not needed for your own medicines: the manufacturing authorisation includes their distribution. |
